That Metal Show – Season 13, Episode 6: Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe and Chris Adler, Charlie Benante

That Metal Show Logo

Musical Guest – Charlie Benante (Anthrax)

During the show it was revealed that the thrash drummer is something of a renaissance man.  To the casual observer, you would not know that he was a drummer if you tuned in during the break where he was jamming on guitar.  He also drew the cover art for an S.O.D. album cover.  Benante discussed the next Anthrax album, and said that it will probably come out in 2015.

NEWS:

Eddie discussed AC/DC news.  Brian Johnson told Eddie that there will be a new album in 2014, and a 40-city tour to coincide with the band’s 40th anniversary.

TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT: AC/DC Album & Tour

Jim – Take it.  Loved the Black Ice album and tour.  Thought that it was the best album in tour in the last 20 years, so he was excited that they’ll be putting out new music and coming back around.

Don – Takes the tour, but could leave a new album.  Feels like there are at least 15 mandatory songs that the band must play from their catalog, and doesn’t see the need for new material.  Said that the Black Ice tour might have been the best show that he’s seen in his life.

Eddie – Take it.  They are one of the all-time great bands, and thinks that it’s still special to see them because they don’t come around that often.  Eddie said that he heard some rumblings that somebody may have to sit the tour out because of some health issues.

TMS Top 5: Guests that the guys want to appear on the show

Maybe the most interesting TMS Top 5 ever because it gave you an inside look at what the guys are thinking.  This list excludes Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Ozzy Osbourne, all of whom say that they have no interest in being on the show.  None of the guys chose Ritchie Blackmore because he has stated that he will not talk about Rainbow or Deep Purple.

  1. Eddie Van Halen
  2. Steven Tyler
  3. Jimmy Page
  4. Angus & Malcolm Young
  5. James Hetfield

GUESTS:

Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe & Chris Adler

The band started out 20 years ago playing in basement parties for beer.  They said that they never thought it would get any better than playing CBGB’s.  Eddie discussed the band’s loyal fanbase that has been built up over the years because they don’t have a signature song or album.  Chris said that they’re a career band and their fans are career fans.  They have never tried to write a single, which they believe helped create a different kind of fanbase.

Upcoming film about band called As The Palaces Burn.  The original intent of the movie was to showcase the fans of the band, but things changed when Blythe was arrested in Prague, Czech Republic by a SWAT team because of a fan that fell from the stage two years prior, went into a coma and subsequently died.  Blythe was charged with manslaughter.  The band had no recollection of the incident.  The tour date seemed like every other show.

The band needed to raise $400,000 in total for Blythe’s bail.  They sold off equipment and did whatever they could to raise the money.  Blythe ended up spending 37 days locked up in Prague in general population before making bail.

After making bail, he was able to come back to the United States.  Of his own accord, he returned to Prague to stand trial and face his accusers.  He truly believed that it was a tragic accident caused a number of events.  The victim’s own uncle said that the band wasn’t at fault.  Blythe wanted to speak to the family to give them answers to their questions.  He felt that he was the only one that could address the questions, and wanted to do whatever he could to alleviate their pain.  He ended up meeting with the family afterwards, but he says that he’ll never reveal the conversation publicly.

Ultimately, the family wanted the band to be a spokesperson for safer shows for the fans.

Blythe has a book coming out early next year called Dark Days, which reveals all of the things that happened in prison where cameras are not allowed.  The band is planning on getting back into the studio by the end of the year, and mixing in a handful of dates.

Adler discussed that he’ll be spending time taking his kid to school in his Prius.

3 Years Hollow – The Cracks: Hard Rock Daddy Album Review

3 Years Hollow The Cracks

It has been a long road for 3 Years Hollow to get to this point in their career.  Like many hard rock bands today, this Midwestern quintet financed their early releases on their own.  They used a Kickstarter campaign to help finance regional tours, and secured a national spot on the Rockstar Energy UPROAR Festival by winning their region in the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands.  Nearly a decade after their formation, all of their hard work has culminated in a record deal with Imagen Records.  Signed by A&R V.P, Morgan Rose (Sevendust), the band has just released The Cracks, a 12-song album that showcases their powerful brand of melodic hard rock.

A number of the songs on the album were featured on 3YH’s most recent self-produced EP, entitled “Remember.”  The title track off of the EP, which has been remastered for The Cracks, made a splash last year when it was featured on SiriusXM’s Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown; it was also named one of the Top 52 Hard Rock Songs of 2013.

While the band is in lockstep with their desire to create melodic hard rock, their sound is admittedly derived from a variety of influences ranging from progressive rock to hair metal to pop punk.

In addition to having Morgan Rose in their corner, the album was produced by Rose’s Sevendust counterpart, Clint Lowery.

Jose Urquiza’s powerful, emotional vocal delivery is ideally complemented by a driving rhythm section and impressive dual guitars, including harmonies which, at times, are reminiscent of classic Judas Priest.  The album is filled with catchy hooks and big anthemic choruses, but what makes The Cracks stand out is the band’s ability to showcase their diversity with dynamic breaks such as the ones incorporated into one of the best tracks on the album, “Chemical Ride.”

Lyrically, the band strives to connect with the fans by writing from the heart and sharing personal experiences that likely affect others.

The song, “For Life,” Urquiza explains, is about a person who is struggling and feels alone in the world, how they are damaged by personal demons but come out on the other side by standing strong in the face of adversity.  “Take The World” also offers a positive message that will resonate with 3YH fans.

3 Years Hollow spent nearly a decade scratching and clawing to avoid falling through “The Cracks” of an unforgiving business that is not nearly as glamorous as it seems from the outside looking in.  While many may look at a record deal and recognition from heavy hitters in the hard rock music genre as arriving, 3YH sees this as just the beginning of things to come.  If all goes well, the band plans on leveraging the album’s success to play summer rock festivals and other shows around the country.

Based on this collection of songs, there is no doubt that 3 Years Hollow’s sound is tailor-made for live performances.  Fans of bands like Sevendust, Disturbed, Nonpoint, Pop Evil and the like, should make it a point to check out these up-and-coming hard rockers.

That Metal Show – Season 13, Episode 5: Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti, Matt Nathanson, Steve Brown

That Metal Show Logo

Musical Guest – Steve Brown

GUESTS:

Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy & Mark Tremonti

Alter Bridge is about to tour Japan, and Myles is in the process of recording a new Slash album as well.  All of the guys say that Fortress is Alter Bridge’s best and heaviest album to date.  Myles talked about how, even though he is the frontman of two bands, his first love is guitar.  He feels completely lost without a guitar.  Tremonti talked about the fact that Myles is an accomplished guitar player, and the two discussed their writing process.

Eddie brought up the fact that Alter Bridge is a monster band in Europe touring arenas.  They became big as a new band because Creed never really played in Europe.  They used to play small clubs in Europe.

Myles talked about joining a band that was made up of three quarters of Creed.

Eddie and the guys were in awe of the fact that Myles played some Led Zeppelin songs with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham for a potential project.

Tremonti talked about Myles’ reaction to being asked to play with the guys from Led Zeppelin, how he was almost in tears from the experience.  Tremonti also talked about his solo project that allows him to tap into his speed metal roots.  They also discussed the fact that Wolfgang Van Halen is the bass player in the band.

Alter Bridge discussed doing festivals in the U.S., and then also doing big things in Europe.

Matt Nathanson (Singer, songwriter, devout metalhead)

The guys got turned on to Matt because he wore a TMS t-shirt for his performance on The Tonight Show.

Nathanson said that TMS is his favorite thing about television.  He feels like he learns about new artists and expands his horizons because of the recommendations made on the show.  He doesn’t play metal because he’s not a very good guitar player, and his vocal range is fairly limited.  Also, he had to be a solo artist because he doesn’t have the patience for band politics.  By his own admission, he is not a team player.

His metal “gateway drug” was KISS.  He talked about how his cat pissed on all of his 70’s KISS records and destroyed them.  He was also a huge fan of the first four Def Leppard albums, and worshipped at the alter of Van Halen, admitting that he is one of the few who loved the Gary Cherone era of Van Halen.

He talked about wanting to dress up as KISS without makeup for Halloween, but his band wouldn’t go for it.

METAL MODEM – Klaus Meine & Rudolph Schenker (Scorpions)

Live from their studio in Germany.  Although it is not entirely clear, the release of MTV Unplugged – Live In Athens seems to have put an end to the retirement talk from the band.  Even though That Metal Show is on VH-1 (part of the MTV family), Eddie Trunk brought up the fact the people may be surprised to hear that the Scorpions had anything to do with MTV Unplugged because of what the station has become in the states.  Apparently, in Greece, MTV is still the MTV that once existed in the U.S.  Klaus said that the 80’s were his favorite era of Scorpions, not only for the band, but just for the state of hard rock in general.  There is hope that they will tour again in the United States.  The band seems to be re-energized by all of the young fans that are coming out to see them.

Rudy also discussed a Schenker Brothers record in the future.
