PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

INCUBUS – “Nimble Bastard”

The evolution of Incubus is the culmination of a journey that began over two decades ago. Bands like this, who unapologetically blur the lines between genres sometimes find themselves on the outside looking in when it comes to radio play.  However, Incubus has managed to garner radio attention even when it felt like the songs weren’t necessarily a great fit, particularly on Active Rock radio.  This time around, these “nimble bastards” from California have landed right in the sweet spot of the format with their latest single, “Nimble Bastard” (from their forthcoming album, 8).  Vacillating between slower, more moody moments and uptempo melodic moments with a heaviness that hasn’t been associated with Incubus in recent times, this song is a perfect fit for Active Rock.  It’s no surprise that it has already cracked the Top 50 this week.  This song should have legs and make a meaningful climb if early spins are any indication of what’s to come.

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

Last week, I predicted that Shinedown was a virtual lock to unseat Metallica and take over the #1 position this week.  Brent Smith and company easily made that prediction come true, gaining nearly 200 spins as their closet competition lost significant spins.  They now hold a lead of 800+ spins over The Pretty Reckless, who, as predicted several weeks ago, is making their move towards the top.  Even if Shinedown plateaus, they should still hold the top spot for at least a month.  With no other artists in reasonable striking distance, “How Did You Love” can coast to a lengthy stay at the top.  Of course, there is always the possibility that they suffer the same fate as Metallica and Green Day in recent weeks and starting trending down as soon as next week.  Time will tell…

HRD SPIN CONTROL (by Adam Waldman and Jon Loveless)

Each week, we will share the songs that we think should be added to rotations, alongside the songs that we feel should be dropped from rotations, either because they are a bad fit for the format, or because they have run their course and it’s time for a new single from the artist.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless

KING OF THE HILL

As expected, Shinedown roars into the #1 position on the new Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart.  Metallica and Green Day both slip back one notch as their airplay takes a heavy hit. However, the momentum was so strong for new “King Of The Hill” that they would have claimed the lead without any slippage involved.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT

Starset breaks into the Top 10  with nice spin gains of more than 10%…

New to the Top 20 this week is the latest from Nickelback and the debut of K.Flay

Mastodon has the high debut in the Top 30 this week…

Missio leads a pair of newcomers in the Top 40….

Veterans Incubus have the highest charting song among three new entries (and one re-entry).

Nickelback“Feed The Machine”

 TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

Radio can be (and sometimes is) pretty fickle, and the fortunes of a song can reverse on a dime, but at the moment, it looks like the top spot on the chart could be in the same hands for the next month easily enough.

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

AMERICAN GRIM – “Idols”

The industrial overtones of Marilyn Manson…the frenetic intensity of Rob Zombie…the swagger of Faith No More…the raw punk edge of The Ramones…the sleaze rock vocal style of Faster Pussycat’s Taime Downe.  Who the hell would ever think to create a rock and roll stew with all of these ingredients?  American Grim…that’s who!  The band’s latest single (“Idols”) from their upcoming debut album (Freakshow) may not easily fit into some subgenre, but who cares?  The bottom line is that this song rocks.

Aside from the fact that the album is about “an entire generation of kids being over medicated, under educated and mass media manipulated,” there is very little information about the band on their website.  Their “about” section on their Facebook page simply reads…“critics claim they understand.”  I may not understand what that exactly means, but I do understand that Active Rock radio sorely needs bands like this to shake things up and (hopefully) create a ripple effect that reverberates to other new artists.  Don’t wait for the crowds to arrive…jump on this bandwagon early and enjoy the ride!

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

Last week, it was predicted that Shinedown would leapfrog Green Day to take over the #2 position.  They came up 10 spins short, but it is almost a guarantee that they will unseat Metallica at the top next week.  Both Metallica and Green Day have hit their peak, and are now on the way down, while Shinedown is still on the rise.  It looks like their eventual challenger is going to be The Pretty Reckless (as predicted several weeks ago), but it could take some time as the gap is still over 700 spins.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless

KING OF THE HILL

Metallica holds onto the top spot in the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart with Green Day still at #2.  The fast approaching object in their rear view mirror is  Shinedown, still at #3, but closing ground quickly.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT

No new songs crack the Top 10, just some minor order shifting…

Skillet has the only debuting song in the Top 20…

Nickelback just misses joining the Top 20, and settles for leading two songs into the Top 30 this week instead…

All That Remains has the week’s highest debut; Mastodon joins them in the Top 40…

Also new to the Top 50 this week are the chart debuts of newcomers Missio and Ded.

 TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

Shinedown looks ready to take over the top spot next week (barring an unexpected reversal of fortune).  If that happens, they will likely have a substantial lead over other contenders that are still moving up, so it could be an relatively extended stay at the top.  Then again, Pretty Reckless could have something to say about that.

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

EVE TO ADAM – “Tongue Tied”

Many of today’s current hard rock acts seem to tailor their sound specifically to get airplay on Active Rock radio.  Eve To Adam has already been embraced by the format (although not nearly as much as they deserve), so it would be understandable for them to rely upon the sound that got them noticed in the first place.  To their credit, Eve To Adam continues to reinvent themselves, writing music that clearly is born more out of passion than a desire for radio spins.  Their latest single, “Tongue Tied,” stands out from typical Active Rock tracks because it embraces the grittier, sleazier sound of Guns N’ Roses, the alternative vibe of classic Stone Temple Pilots and bluesy guitar solos that harken back to the days of Eric Clapton with Cream.  And yet, somehow, “Tongue Tied” has a current flavor that would make it a standout track on Active Rock radio.  In a format that sometimes feels like it’s on autopilot, we need more bands like Eve To Adam to push the envelope and rise above the din. This track is a home run!

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

As predicted last week, Metallica, Green Day and Shinedown now make up the top 3 after strong gains from “How Did I Love” helped Shinedown to leapfrog Ghost and Highly Suspect (both of whom saw significant drops). Metallica’s “Atlas, Rise!” picks up strong momentum, while Green Day stayed flat, making their reign at the top very brief.  Shinedown is likely to move up to #2 next week, but Green Day can remain in the top 3 if they don’t suffer drastic spin declines.  Metallica and Shinedown will remain in the top 2 for at least the next month or so based on current trends.  The closest songs to them showing any strength are still 700-1000 spins behind.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless

KING OF THE HILL

New week, new #1 song on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart as Metallica continues their triumphant comeback.  “Atlas, Rise” is the second chart topper from Hardwired, knocking Green Day back to the #2 spot after just one week.   Shinedown moves up to #3 with nice growth as well.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT

Major increase in airplay for Pretty Reckless sees them leap into the Top 10 this week.  Solid growth for Korn brings them into the group as well…

Through Fire and Devour The Day are both new members of the Top 20.,,

Skillet leads four songs into the Top 30…

Letters From The Fire is the only newcomer to the Top 40, thanks to over a 60% increase in spins…

With only a partial week of airplay, Nickelback has the strongest debut among five songs breaking into the Top 50.

 TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

While chart positions may not mean as much as they once did (particularly for established artists), I have to think that Metallica is quite satisfied with the airplay results for their first “normal” studio album in eight years (we’ll just try to forget Lulu ever happened).  Their release pattern for singles was nontraditional, dropping three in rapid succession,  with each subsequent release cutting into the airplay for the others.   It worked out well for them however, with two #1s and a #4, and gave them a long stretch where they had at least two (if not three) songs in the Top 40 simultaneously.  The strategy wouldn’t have worked for everyone (possibly no one else), but Metallica has once again managed to rule the rock airwaves with the approach.

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

MESSAGE FROM SYLVIA – “Right Here And Now”

Message From Sylvia is one of the more exciting bands to grace the Active Rock airwaves in recent times.  The band’s first single – “Heart Of War” – cracked the top 30 last year.  There’s no reason to believe that the follow-up single – “Right Here And Now” won’t enjoy similar (or even greater) success.  The combination of the three Lopez-Smith brothers (formerly of First Decree) and vocalist Matthew Nevitt (ex-DoryDrive) makes for an ideal chemistry.  On “Right Here And Now,” the band showcases an impressive ability to blend the light with the dark, similar to the way that Alter Bridge transitions between soaring vocals, anguished guitars and thunderous rhythms.  At times in the song, MFS captures the melodic sensibilities of Foo Fighters.  To be able to inspire comparisons to some of the biggest names in the genre at this early stage of their journey speaks volumes about the potential of these up-and-comers.  Based on the music so far, you have to think that this is a band with staying power.  Hopefully they will get the attention that they deserve in a crowded field.

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

As predicted last week, Green Day’s “Still Breathing” takes over the #1 position from Ghost, and Metallica’s “Atlas, Rise!” moves up to #2.  Based on current trends and spin totals for each of these songs, they’re probably both no more than a few weeks away from hitting a plateau (if not a reversal).  Shinedown’s “How Did You Love” is poised to move into the top 3 next week. Unless something unexpected happens, these three will jockey for position at the top for at least the next month.  It looked as though The Pretty Reckless was on track to jump up to the top 3 for a reunion of dominance that took place with Green Day and Metallica during 2016, but their latest single (“Oh My God”) seems to have lost some steam for the moment.

As expected, the new week sees Green Day take over the #1 spot on the latest Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart.  Also up two spots this week is the new #2 song from Metallica, trailed by former #1s from Ghost and Highly Suspect.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT

No new songs in the Top 10 this week (only the order has changed)…

Only one new arrival in the Top 20 – the latest from Sick PuppiesRed Hot Chili Peppers “climb” back in as well (despite losing spins over the previous week)…

K-Flay is the only new entry in the Top 30…

New entries in the Top 40 come from format powerhouses Halestorm and Skillet

The only debut in the Top 50 this week comes from As Lions, the London-based band fronted by Austin Dickinson (son of Iron Maiden’s legendary vocalist Bruce Dickinson).

 TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

With five of the top eight songs suffering declining airplay, it appears that attrition may shake the top of the chart up over the next couple of weeks.  That could be good news for mainstays in the format such as Breaking Benjamin and Korn, both of whom have been stuck in the 10-15 range of the chart for almost two months.

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

SEPTEMBER MOURNING – “20 Below”

September Mourning is the type of visual band that would have been a big hit back in the MTV days.  The video for “20 Below” is a cinematic experience that goes way beyond the song.  This is not to say that the song doesn’t stand on its own; it absolutely does.  Active Rock programmers would be wise to add this song into rotation immediately.  Even without the video, the song has a theatrical vibe that makes it stand out amongst other female-fronted hard rock acts today.  The sex appeal and mystique that September exudes in the video shines through in “20 Below” (even without visual aids).  Her stirring vocals offer a nice blend of power and beauty.  While September captures your attention most, the rest of the hard-hitting band creates an ideal canvas for her to paint mental images with her unique style.  This is a band on the rise that should continue to build upon their dedicated fanbase as more rock music fans discover them.

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

Ghost looks to be the victim of bad timing.  The rise of “Square Hammer” to the top of the chart was delayed by the year-end freeze at radio.  Now that they have finally reached the top, their reign is going to end next week when Green Day’s “Still Breathing” takes over. Also on the “rise” is “Atlas, Rise!” – the third single off of Metallica’s latest album.  It looks like this duo is going to battle it out for at least the next several weeks for the #1 position.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless

KING OF THE HILL

Despite slipping back a bit, Ghost holds on to the top spot of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart for at least another week.  Highly Suspect fell back almost the same number of spins, keeping the top two positions intact, while #3 Green Day was probably a couple days worth of increased spins short of jumping to the top.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT

Beartooth enjoys enough growth to reach the Top 10…

Bleeker benefits from being added nationwide by a major ownership group, and climbs strongly into the Top 20…

Amity Affliction has the only new entry in the Top 30 this week…

New singles from Avatar, Alter Bridge, and Citizen Zero all make their chart debut inside the Top 40…

Three additional songs are added to the Top 50 as well, with Skillet and Letters From The Fire being joined by newcomers, Radkey.

 TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

No, I didn’t forget to update the three songs in the “Three Up & Three Down” section.  The most notable gainers and losers last week are the same as the most notable this week.   The format as a whole continues to struggle with moving off songs in a timely fashion, an issue that seems to really be taking hold as a permanent condition.   I’m increasingly concerned that rock radio – what’s left of it – may be steadily moving toward the model that’s long been the case with the Country format, where singles frequently take six months to run their course.

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

WOVENWAR – “Lines In The Sand”

Wovenwar certainly seems to have their finger on the pulse of the mood in America, where the country is more divided than ever.  Because people seem to be drawing “Lines In The Sand,” the chasm grows more by the day.  The melodic parts of the song take on a neutral, observational stance, while the tortured growls embody the rage being felt by many (at least that is my interpretation).  A perfect storm of unlikely events and shifts in mindset has taken us to a tipping point where compromise and debate has been replaced by finger-pointing and judgment.  The lyric…“to build a wall, between us all, it’s our downfall” speaks volumes about where we are as a society.  Wovenwar perfectly captures the frustration that many people are feeling these days with the thought-provoking “Lines In The Sand.”

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

It took quite some time, but Ghost finally ascended to the top of the chart, replacing Highly Suspect after a lengthy run (that was extended by radio going on auto-pilot around the holidays).  No songs in the rear view mirror have much momentum, so unless Ghost reverses course, they will enjoy a decent run at the top.  Green Day seems to be next in line for yet another #1 single.  It doesn’t look like Metallica’s “Atlas, Rise!” will have enough momentum to challenge Green Day for the top, but that can change at any moment.  The hottest song rising up the charts is “Oh My God” by The Pretty Reckless.  Could this trio once again occupy the top 3 as they did for an extended period in 2016?  It certainly is a possibility at this point, although The Pretty Reckless would have to leapfrog a number of bands to get there.  Stay tuned…

 TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

Signs of life at rock radio, or at the very least, indications that people have returned to work.  Among the victims of the prolonged lack of activity appears to be Volbeat, who appeared to be headed for a #1 song, but will instead likely have to settle for a 16-week stint in the Top 10.

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

HALESTORM – “Still Of The Night”

Halestorm takes some recent trends (hard rock cover songs and a classic rock revival) and knocks it out of the park with their balls-to-the-wall interpretation of Whitesnake’s “Still Of The Night.”  There are a lot of powerful female vocalists out these days, but Lzzy Hale is on another level.  With a sexiness that rivals Hollywood actresses, a vocal delivery that stands toe-to-toe with the legendary voices of classic rock and an ability to appeal to rock fans across the generations, Hale is a unique talent.  Like many bands these days, Halestorm releases EPs so that they always have fresh material and can stay out on the road.  However, Halestorm is the only band that has created a recurring series of cover EPs (ReAniMate).  “Still Of The Night” is off of the latest installment (3.0).  Back in the ’80s, girls wanted to be with David Coverdale and guys wanted to be him.  Fast forward three decades, and Hale has reversed that trend (although you have to imagine that she has her fair share of female suitors).  As usual, Hale and company have delivered a kickass cover that pays homage to the original while making it their own.

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

2017 begins as 2016 ended – with Highly Suspect’s “My Names Is Human” sitting on top once again (despite a moderate decline in spins).  Ghost closed the gap with a moderate gain in spins, but even a replication of this week will not be enough to reach the top.  At this point, the only prediction that can be made is that radio should get back to work, because it still looks like things are on autopilot.  Here’s another prediction far from the top…Twenty One Pilots will see the return of “Stressed Out” fall off the chart once again (where it belongs).  There is absolutely no rationale for the song coming back onto the chart again long after it made its run.  If you read this column regularly, you know our feelings about the band even being on the chart in the first place.

THE BREAKDOWN by Jon Loveless

KING OF THE HILL

The beat goes on (and on and on) for Highly Suspect on top of the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart for an eighth consecutive week. Ghost and Volbeat remain second and third for their sixth straight week in those spots.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT

Breaking Benjamin slips into the Top 10…

The only new entry in the Top 20 is from Pop Evil

Bleeker makes a big jump into the Top 30, Avatar rises into that tier as well…

Returning to the Top 40 this week is Badflower.  Three other songs reach that strata despite having fewer spins than the week before….

There are four songs arriving in the Top 50 this week but the most interesting (and puzzling) case might be the Twenty One Pilots track that returns after nearly a year’s absence, having spent 13 weeks on the chart previously starting as far back as November 2014.

THREE UP & THREE DOWN

RISING

Green Day“Still Breathing”

Pretty Reckless“Oh My God”

Bleeker“Highway”

FALLING

A Day To Remember“Naivety”

One Less Reason“Break Me”

Sylar“Dark Daze”

 TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

Yes, Active Rock radio has resorted to recycling songs that ran their course over a year ago. It’s reaching the point that I can’t really even try to explain some of the things that happen without the use of very strong language.   Since I’m trying to avoid that, I’m uncharacteristically at a loss for words.

Top 50 Active Rock Songs of 2016 (by spins)

top-50-active-rock-songs-of-2016

It’s been proven once again this year that Active Rock radio has a handful of favorite artists that are virtually guaranteed airplay whenever a single is released.  While most of these artists are household names in Active Rock, a few newer artists have risen to this level.  A dozen artists accounted for more than half of the Top 50 Active Rock Songs of 2016. The disturbing trend of “wasted spins” on artists/songs that don’t fit the format continues to grow, and there seems to be no end in sight.

It should be noted that this recap is based solely on spin totals, not editorial opinion.  To see the songs chosen by Hard Rock Daddy, check back later in the week when the Top 100 Hard Rock Songs of 2016 list is published.

Using the actual spins that each song received while featured in the Top 50 of the Active Rock Mediabase Charts (compiled by AllAccess.com), Hard Rock Daddy’s HRD Radio Report ranks the Top 50 Active Rock Songs of 2016 (below).

Active Rock fans should also check out the Top 30 Octane Big ‘Uns Countdown Songs of 2016.

PUBLISHER’S PICK OF THE WEEK (By Adam Waldman)

DOROTHY – “Dark Nights”

One of the most unique new artists to arrive on the rock scene in recent times is Dorothy.  This is the type of band that is desperately needed to keep things fresh on Active Rock radio.  If you’ve listened to any of their music, you know that they are blazing their own trail, not writing songs to travel down the road already paved by others.  Other bands have infused a Led Zeppelin influence into their music as of late, but none of have done it with the sexy swagger that Dorothy brings to the table.  It remains to be seen if they will get enough support to make a run to the top of the chart, but with “Dark Nights,” this band once again proves that they are a force to be reckoned with in the coming year.

PUBLISHER’S PREDICTIONS (by Adam Waldman)

Predictions are fairly useless this week, given that it looks like Active Rock Radio stations are mostly on auto-pilot.  Highly Suspect finishes 2016 strong, but should be challenged in the coming weeks once people actually get back to work.  Stay tuned…

Highly Suspect rides out 2016 in the top spot on the Mediabase Active Rock Airplay chart. Ghost and Volbeat remain second and third with charts as frozen as I can recall.

NOTABLE CHART MOVEMENT

How frozen were active rock stations between the holidays?  The top 45 songs are all the same as last week, with no song among them gaining or losing more than a single position in the chart.

Dorothy returns to the Top 50 with “Dark Nights,” and AFI breaks into the published chart in the final spot with “White Offerings,”

THREE UP & THREE DOWN

RISING

Shinedown“How Did You Love”

Breaking Benjamin“Never Again”

Starset“Monster”

FALLING

Five Finger Death Punch“I Apologize”

Dinosaur Pile-Up – “11:11”

Sick Puppies – “Where Do I Begin”

TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS

It’s a dead week for radio, for most artists, for record labels and promotion companies.   Can’t really be too critical of the stuck-on-hold approach because of that, although I believe it does highlight the lack of initiative that plagues many stations today.
